Classroom Supplies

The parent association's bulk order of supplies has arrived. While this will fill the gap for now, we are looking into other options to create a system that is more efficient, economical, and will keep the supply closet stocked with basic supplies for all classrooms. We welcome anyone who wishes to help!

Family Wellness Committee

As we begin to emerge from a time where our communities were stripped of the connection we all thrive from, please join parent volunteers in a collective to communicate and learn from each other.

MSC is participating in a new, citywide DOE initiative to support family wellness.  Please join parent volunteers to discuss ways for the adults in our school community to connect with each other and communicate with each other—things that are always appreciated but that feel extra important now during this extended time of isolation.

Please join us on Monday November 15 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm by Zoom.

Topic: Family Wellness Committee
Time: Nov 15, 2021 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Draw the HEART of MSC

Our community values progressive education through the arts, and no one knows it like you. That’s why we’re putting out a call to every student artist!

The Friends of MSC invite you to submit an original masterpiece that depicts the heart of MSC, and expresses how you, your classmates, and MSC families create community. We’ll feature your submission in our Giving Tuesday messages and on a super special piece of spirit wear, to be revealed later this month.

Please send a high-resolution image to cotreasurer@friendsofmsc.org by November 16, 2021, and we’ll let you know when your art is slated for the spotlight.

Here’s the fine print:

  • Accepted file types: .PDF and .JPEG preferred; AI, .EPS, or .PNG okay

  • Maximum file size: 10MB

  • Minimum image size: 1500px by 1500px, transparent background preferred

  • Maximum colors: 8

  • By submitting, you permit us to reproduce your work in Friends of MSC communications and on MSC gear for sale.

Greenhouse News

It has been harder to eat our produce in a safe way, so we figured we would share with families!

Once every 4-6 weeks students will bring home a plant to share with their families. Usually this will be a leafy green such as lettuce, Kale, Swiss chard, or Pac Choi. Students are either bringing them home in their lunchbox or in a reusable bag. If you wouldn’t mind washing the bag and sending it back in with your child that would be super helpful. Also, 2-5 graders have been working on sustainability projects to improve the environment at school. Some made paper projects, which are hanging around the school, and some made digital projects, click to view!

Ongoing: Candy Wrapper Recycling

Have candy wrappers in October/November? You can recycle them! Shakira signed us up for a candy wrapper recycling program, just in case anyone was planning on letting their kids eat some candy. Find out which day your child has Greenhouse Science, and put EMPTY wrappers in a sealed baggie (that can get recycled, too!)

Program is available until mid November.

Manhattan School for Children

Scaffolding Removal Efforts

Are you tired of sending your kids to school in a construction zone and only having access to half of the big yard? If you are a K-2 parent, do you dread the morning drop-off mayhem that ensues every time rain floods the big/little yards? If you are an ICT parent, do you worry about your child safely navigating the various construction-related perils on and around the building? Do you simply want your kids to see actual sunlight from their classroom windows? If you answered “yes”, “maybe”, or even “I’m not sure” to any of the foregoing, then read on!

We are a group of concerned and frustrated MSC parents with varying degrees of expertise and involvement in NYC politics, DOB/DOE, and the real estate and construction industries. Our goal is finding out why construction has been ongoing for over 7 years with no end in sight, and where exactly we can exert pressure to expedite completion (and scaffolding removal) ASAP. We have started piecing together clues based on DOB online filings and conversations with the school, but welcome any historical and/or other insight that parents (especially those of older students) may have. We recently had an encouraging meeting with the new Manhattan borough president who now shares our concerns, and have assured him that we’re ready to make as big a stink as is necessary to get results. This may involve attending and speaking at community meetings, writing and signing (angry) letters, making phone calls, etc.

Anyone interested in joining our crusade should email Gui.Stampur@gmail.com and Lynnsfeng@gmail.com.

We are stronger together!

And we want your input!

Please register
