Welcome Shanna and Linda!

Welcome Shanna Tengshe and Linda Saffire to the team! Shanna will be joining the FOMSC Executive Board as a Co-Secretary and Linda will be joining the School Leadership Team (SLT) as a parent representative. Thank you, both, for volunteering!

Here is some information from the PA:

Update: COVID Testing Notifications

Every student tested is given a xerox letter after the test, click here to access a copy of that letter. Though the letters should make their way home, often they do not and are found left behind in the auditorium (most frequently if students go from testing to gym or recess). Every student tested is also sent an email from the testing company, SOMOS Community Care.

Results are ready in 48 hours. There are three ways to retrieve results:

1. MISOMOS.COM: click on “LOGIN” to register or sign-in. During registration, first name, last name, zip code, and date of birth must match the information held by the NYCDOE.*

2. MISOMOS MOBILE APP: available on Google Play and the iPhone App. Store. During registration, first name, last name, zip code, and date of birth must match the information held by the NYCDOE.*

3. SOMOS RESULTS HOTLINE: 833-357-6267

    • Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Parents/guardians and school staff can check for results 48 hours after testing. You no longer need to wait for notification from SOMOS that results are ready, however, SOMOS will send a notification email (if you provided an email address) or text (if you provided a cell phone number) that results are available to be retrieved through one of the above methods.

* Please make sure your contact information is up to date on MySchools as that is where the testing company gets this information. You can confirm your information here: https://www.myschools.nyc/en/

Update: DOE Water Testing

The water was last tested in our school building on April 4, 2019. The initial laboratory results, shared via letter dated May 15, 2019 indicated only one water outlet was found to contain elevated lead levels. A follow-up letter dated June 11, 2019 indicated the issue was remediated and that lab results for all operational sources of water showed no elevated levels of lead. These letters can be found here.

Lost and Found Protocols

Please label all items being brought into our school! At this time, no one is allowed to enter the school building for the purpose of looking for lost items.

Lost items (articles of clothing, lunchboxes, water bottles, etc) are gathered during the school day and brought to the main office. Anything that is found with a student's name or class number on it is delivered to the classroom at some point during the day. Students may also go to the main office to retrieve their forgotten items. 

Students/families may not return to the school building after school to retrieve lost items.

Families who have lost items can email Malaka or Tatiana with a request to confirm if the items can be found and returned to the student.

All items not claimed are placed in plastic bags and donated. Donations occur approximately 4 times a year - usually before a school break for holidays,  spring break and at the end of the year.

Book Room Volunteers Needed

Dear Parents, 

My name is Gali Kidron and I am a parent at the school and Chair of the Book Room.  I currently have 2 boys at MSC Tomer (1st grade) and Nadav (7th grade). My eldest son, Ori, graduated from MSC in June 2020. I started volunteering in the Book Room when Ori was a kindergartener 10 years ago.

It is a magical small room on the 6th floor that has a big literacy impact in teachers and students lives. All thanks to our parent volunteers throughout the years. I am currently looking for volunteers to help get the Book Room back up and running.


Wednesday, Oct 27th - 8:30-11:00

Due to COVID restrictions, we can only have a maximum of 5 volunteers in the room at a time. 

Volunteers must:

be vaccinated and present proof of vaccination to the school safety officer. 

complete the DOE health screening before entering the building.

wear a mask at all times including while they volunteer in the book room. 

enter as a group after drop off as soon as all the kids entered the building.

I look forward to hearing from you and to our time together in the Book Room.

Plant Donations

Do you have an extra plant at home that you would like to donate?

A group of fifth graders is looking for specific air purifying plants to help clean the air in classrooms. They are looking for: English Ivy; Spider Plant; Pothos; Peace Lily; Snake Plant; Philodendron; Dracaena; Rubber Plant; Ficus Plant.

If you have cuttings or small plants to donate please email Shakira to find a morning to meet up outside the school door. Thanks in advance!

Parent Green Team

Shakira is seeking parents and guardians to join a virtual Parent Green Team. This committee will brainstorm ways to incorporate practices for general sustainability, as well as the health of our students. Meeting day and time will be determined via a poll. Interested parents should reach out to sprovasoli@schools.nyc.gov

Free Money & Public Health Fundraiser

Dear Friends of MSC,

New York City is partnering with parent associations like ours to encourage vaccination in our community. Whether a middle school student or a grandparent down the hall, for every eligible individual who we refer to a city-run site or for an in-home appointment, our PA will receive $100.

It’s as easy as:

  1. Community members request an appointment slot on the NYC Appointment Scheduler.

  2. During the online registration, they will be asked: “Were you referred for your vaccination by an organization as part of the NYC Vaccine Referral Bonus Program?” They should list Friends of the Manhattan School for Children, Inc.!

  3. The Friends of MSC will receive cash for each referral up to $20,000 at the conclusion of this drive.

Ongoing: Candy Wrapper Recycling

Have candy wrappers in October/November? You can recycle them! Shakira signed us up for a candy wrapper recycling program, just in case anyone was planning on letting their kids eat some candy. Find out which day your child has Greenhouse Science, and put EMPTY wrappers in a sealed baggie (that can get recycled, too!)

Program is available until mid November.
