In light of the ongoing acts of brutality and violence against the African-American community—including the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd—we invite our school-wide community to join together for a conversation.  Together, we can acknowledge these horrendous acts and the impact they have on all of us, but especially young people of color.

We recognize that this is a systemic crisis that has been going on for a long, long time, and that each of us has opportunities to advocate more loudly for racial justice.  It is important to have this conversation now more than ever so that our youth and their families can strategize, organize, and mobilize for a better and inclusive future.

This is an all-school event, that will include all current and alumni families, teachers, and staff along with students.  The event may be most appropriate for middle school-age students, although families can determine if their younger children may benefit from participating.

MSC Parent facilitators will open the forum with a video of Killer Mike’s recent press conference (Parents who wish to view it first can find it here, and determine whether it is appropriate for their aged children).  It’s a powerful testimony for the moment, which we believe helps set the context for the conversation.   The MSC parent facilitators will share their perspective as African-American men and women,  and speak directly to children and parents on how they are processing and responding to this moment.

This will be a space for all in our community – those targeted by racism and those who bear witness to it – to speak, listen, and share ways to confront and address these issues.
